iv.

Your first dip.

A sound bath isn't a workout, a class, or a performance. You lie down, close your eyes, and let the vibrations from singing bowls, gongs, and voice wash over you for about an hour. Most people drift off at least a little — that's the point. No movement, chanting, or effort is required.

What actually happens

You'll arrive, find a mat (they're usually provided), and get comfortable. The practitioner will explain what's about to happen, then begin playing. Instruments rise and fall in long, slow waves. Your only job is to stay horizontal and breathe. Some people fall asleep; some just rest with their thoughts. Both are fine.

Sessions usually run 45 to 90 minutes. The practitioner brings the sound down gradually at the end, gives you a few quiet minutes to surface, and then it's over. There is nothing to "do well" at.

What to bring

Arrive ten minutes early — most spaces lock the door once the session begins. Bring socks, a water bottle, and an open mind. Mats and blankets are typically provided, but a light layer of your own never hurts, since lying still for an hour can leave you cool.

Choosing a session

For a first time, look for a group session at an established studio or a recurring community event. Smaller instruments — one or two gongs and a handful of bowls — tend to feel more contained than a sprawling set with cymbals and sudden loud strikes. If you're noise-sensitive or anxious, tell the practitioner ahead of time; most will seat you near the exit and adjust the volume.

Browse a city page to compare practitioners, formats, and price points before you book. A short, affordable, well-reviewed group session is almost always the right starting point.

Afterward

Surface slowly. Don't rush back into the day — walk, drink water, and give yourself a few minutes before checking your phone. Some people feel deeply relaxed, others feel a little emotional, and some feel nothing in particular. All of it is normal, and none of it means you did it wrong.
